Tay Whiteside works at Black Dog Salvage in Roanoke, Virginia, a shop started by his father in 1999. They specialize in rescuing vintage and antique architectural pieces and the repurposing of metal for furniture and other household items, including fine art. Each piece they build is unique.
“I build little things here and there for myself and my house,” Tay says. “I built a vanity. It has a bamboo top. I call it the ‘Manity,’ because, man vanity. There’s a saw blade on the side of it. It’s this metal frame with a bamboo top and a saw blade with the holder coming out for the toilet paper. The roll goes right in the center of this big old saw blade. Of course, I dulled it down just a bit.”
